Bloodbirds
Üçlemenin tek sözlü parçası. Şair, beklediğimiz yıkımı söze döker; ama yas tutmaz — teşhis koyar.
Açılış teşhisi
The god of man is a failure.
Sözün ortasında üçlemenin baş motifi yeniden geçer; "yanan kale" imgesi, "parçalanmış göğe karşı" (against the grain of the shattered sky) uzanır. Bloodbirds kavramı — yanmış, kana batmış kuşlar — yangının tek yönlü ve geri döndürülemez akışını taşıyan figürdür: kül olan, küle döndüğünde bile akmaya devam eder; ama artık akışa karşı duramaz. Bu, fiziğin entropi dediği şeyin şiirsel ikizidir. Akışa karşı duran gölgeydi; kül olduğunda gölge itirazını kaybeder.

Haughm’un lirik tavrı
Söz yazarı John Haughm’un üslubu, açıklamak yerine çağıran bir dildir. Romantik ve transandantalist etkiler (Emerson, Thoreau) Agalloch’un sözlerinde yıllardır okunmuştur; ancak burada, doğanın yüceliğinin yerini doğanın geri alışı almıştır. Şair "fazla cilalı" bir mistisizmden kaçınır; söz çıplaktır.
Dinle
The trilogy’s only vocal piece. The poet finally speaks the ruin we have been expecting — without mourning; closer to diagnosis.
The opening diagnosis
The god of man is a failure. — Bloodbirds, opening line
One line carries the spine of the trilogy: the gods modern humans invent — religion, nation, the private "fortress" — are failures. This inverts a religious conceit: "God is not in the image of man; the god of man is the insufficiency of that image itself." This page proposes a further reading: the god of man is the fortress the shadow builds against the destruction inside the flow. Refusing to accept that destruction, the shadow invents a guardian in its own likeness; but that guardian cannot stop the arrow of time, and the line announces its collapse. The seed of that fortress — though it is never said out loud — is the fear of death: death is the name entropy takes inside living form, and the god of man is, above all, the bearer of the promise not to die. The line announces a god who could not keep that promise. The song delivers this not as invective but as something closer to the calm of a weather report. The line connects directly to the dark wing of the site — cosmic pessimism.
The image of fire
Mid-song the trilogy’s central motif returns; the burning fortress lies "against the grain of the shattered sky." The figure of bloodbirds — charred birds, bleeding back to the ground — carries the one-way, irreversible flow of the fire: what becomes ash keeps flowing even as ash, and can no longer stand against that flow. This is the poetic twin of what physics calls entropy. What stood against the grain was the shadow; in ash it loses its objection.

Haughm’s lyrical stance
Lyricist John Haughm tends to summon rather than explain. Romantic and transcendentalist tonalities (Emerson, Thoreau) have long been read into Agalloch’s words; here, though, the sublimity of nature is replaced by nature taking itself back. The line is bare, not ornate.
Listen
The god of man is a failure.

The god of man is a failure. — Bloodbirds, premier vers

The god of man is a failure. — Bloodbirds, primer verso

The god of man is a failure. — Bloodbirds,
В середине песни возвращается центральный мотив трилогии; горящая крепость лежит «against the grain of the shattered sky».

The god of man is a failure. — Bloodbirds、
燃える城砦は「against the grain of the shattered sky(砕けた空の木目に逆らって)」横たわる。
