Spinoza
Spinoza, Etika’nın üçüncü bölümünde (III, Önerme 6) site tezinin metafizik dayanağını verir: conatus — “her şey, kendi varlığında ısrar etmeye çabalar” (unaquaeque res, quantum in se est, in suo esse perseverare conatur).
If entropy is "the law of flow," Spinoza tells us what kind of beings we are inside that flow: not subjects standing outside nature, but modes of nature itself.
One substance, two attributes
For Spinoza, what exists is one substance. We can grasp this substance in two distinct ways: as thought and as extension. Mind and body are not separate things but the same substance under two attributes. The radical upshot: there is no god standing "above" nature; what there is, is nature itself as active cause.
Deus sive Natura
Spinoza’s formula is famously short: Deus sive Natura — "God or Nature." How to read it is historically contested. One reading calls him a pantheist: God is everything. Another distinguishes natura naturans (nature as active cause) from natura naturata (nature as effect), and identifies God only with the first. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is explicit about this: reading Spinoza as a strict pantheist is a choice, not the only available reading.
Being a mode of nature
The consequence is decisive for this site. If we are not warriors over and against nature but modes of nature, there is no "outside the fire" to stand in. We can therefore read the opening line of Bloodbirds not as a loss but as a recognition: the god of man — a subject standing over nature, watching out for us, taking sides — is a failure; there never was such a subject.
Conatus: the metaphysics of persistence
In Part III of the Ethics (Proposition 6) Spinoza gives the classical metaphysical ground for the site’s thesis: conatus — “each thing, as far as it lies in itself, endeavors to persist in its being” (unaquaeque res, quantum in se est, in suo esse perseverare conatur). This striving is not a choice; it is an inclination internal to a mode because it is what the mode is. In III/7 Spinoza takes a further step: the actual essence of a thing is its persisting in its being. The conatus is not a property we have but the very direction of being us, at any moment.
From here the language of the synthesis page becomes precise: character lives the conatus as it is; the shadow mis-positions the conatus as a fortress against finitude. Character carries "persistence" as a form of the flow — it persists as a mode of the same substance even as the form scatters. The shadow reads "persistence" as not scattering, and so starts building fortresses against the arrow of time; the defense erected against death is the fortress-architecture of that mis-reading. Spinoza does not condemn the error; he diagnoses it as native to a mode with limited knowledge. The trilogy’s "fire" is the moment that mis-reading cracks on its own.
Connection to the trilogy
After Spinoza, the burning fortress sounds different. The burning is not an attack on Nature; it is one of Nature’s self-appearances. Acceptance is neither despair nor sacrifice; it prefigures the Nietzsche side of amor fati — seeing what happens as an appearance of the real substance itself.
Deus sive Natura
Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
Conatus:
Deus sive Natura
Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
Conatus——
